Dr. Renata de Fátima Bretanha Rocha, from the Postgraduate Program in Animal Science - UFV, was awarded the CAPES Award for Best Thesis 2024 in the area of Animal Science and Fisheries Resources for her work defended under the guidance of Professor Simone Eliza Facioni Guimarães.
Her thesis "Phenotypic and Genomic Analysis of the Number of Oocytes and Embryos of the Gir Breed," addressed the production of oocytes and embryos, whose significant increase in recent years has been essential for increasing genetic gain in the Gir dairy herd.
In her research, were evaluated genetic parameters, runs of homozygosity, inbreeding, signatures of selection, the inheritance of genomic regions and the parental origin of alleles for number of embryos and total and viable oocytes.
The results contribute for new knowledge about the production of oocytes and embryos for Brazilian livestock, highlighting the importance of studying reproductive characteristics in cattle. Furthermore, the thesis resulted in five academic articles, one technical article and four tutorials of the analyzes developed.
The student receives congratulations from the department, GDMA and the entire scientific community at UFV.
